Country Road

This is a scene from Lummi Nation, a Native American tribe of the Coast Salish group located in western Washington.  They are the third largest tribe in Washington State with over 5000 members on 13,000 acres of tidelands,  Coleville and Yakama tribes are larger.  My mother worked on the Coleville reservation in the late 70's for a couple of years as a Registered Nurse, an admirable way to give back, something she embraced her whole life but was able to act upon once she became an empty nester.

Sitting On Top of the World

I painted this from a reference photo taken by the fisherman in the boat in the foreground.  He and my brother were fishing in Trout Lake, NW Ontario.  When I saw the composition I knew I wanted to paint it so permission was granted and away I went.  I did a draft and had to tweak my drawing and values a bit but I am happy about the result.  What fun because the photographer knew what he was doing!

Mount Baker

The weather was good so I headed east about twenty minutes and pulled over to the side of the road next to a field.  I got my gear set up and this car stopped across the street and asked if I minded if she let her birds out in the same spot where I was painting.  This woman had about 43 homing pigeons that she was training for the upcoming parade.  There were three boxes which she let out in 5 minute intervals over the field (which they like), they flew around in about a 300 foot radius and then the next bunch would join in with them, until they were all together.  There was one out of 43 that was not flying in line, she said it was because the bird was left handed.  I'm not kidding.  They were to fly back to her farm which was about a 1 or 2 miles from where we were.
You just never know who you are going to meet or what you are going to learn when you are painting in plein air.

Old Highway 99

I drive by this farm on my way south and I just love the red barns - like waving a cape at a bull.  I had to stop, drive down highway 99 and because of the looming clouds, I took a photo and painted this in my studio.

Every Leaf, Every Flower

Derby pond, a small pond is fed by Whatcom Creek, which then in turn, feeds Whatcom Falls. It's all only a 15 minute walk from my house - a walk I take with my dog almost every morning, a dog who is eager and quick to get there and slow and reluctant to return.  On the way back he stops along the trail to smell every leaf, every flower.

The "Ham"

My first plein air painting after I moved here in April.  It was a beautiful 70 degree day after a week of cold, rainy days and nights.  This was painted from the marina looking south across the bay to downtown and Western (Wash) University.
Now that I live in the "Ham", I guess that makes me a Hamster...who paints.

Bay Beauty

Welcome to the Pacific Northwest! I am now living and painting in Northern Washington, and finding vistas and inspiration at every turn. It is so lucky and right that my daughter gave me Mary Oliver's "Upstream" for my birthday, my first birthday in my new location.  Essays about nature and much more.
Painted on Lummi Island (rhymes with Tummy), a five minute ferry ride from the mainland on a small but serious sixteen car ferry.  This is looking east to Bellingham and Mount Baker beyond.  This past weekend was the annual Ski-to-Sea seven leg race that starts with skiing at Mt Baker and ends at the Bay with Sea Kayaking, and 5 other sports in between.  The whole town turns out for it.

Serenity

From my trip to Norway last summer.  It was such a beautiful, balanced and grounded image.  Yet, fragile.

Old Field Point

Old Field Point on a rainy, winter day.  It was a lot of fun driving around the Three Village area, Old Field, Stony Brook and Setauket.  Even with the storm, Strong's Neck, West Meadow, Crane Neck are beautiful.  Lots of high tides and flooding, even on the north shore.

Winter Wonderland

Day 24.
Stony Brook Village.  I spend many, many hours playing and hanging around this village. It was a joy to paint.  It was raining out so I painted in my car across from the creek.

Montauk Point Light House

Day 23.
I was back east last week and had trouble posting using the Blogger app so there was a posting gap but not a painting gap.  I kept painting every day and so I will catch you up day by day.

It was a stormy day out east last week!  This is the Montauk Point Lighthouse, a beautiful beacon surrounded by beautiful grounds all of which were closed when I was there due to the flood and wind warnings.

Morning Stroll at Liberty Station

Another break in the storms that have been coming at us every week this month, I'm not complaining because it's a good thing overall.  However, I did enjoy getting out yesterday morning to paint at Liberty Station.  This is the channel off the bay runs along the back of the galleries and restaurants, etc.

Rainy Road to San Diego

Day 13 of 31.
Happy Friday the 13th!  A little Pen and Ink sketch today.

Rainy days, took a photo while driving home.  I leave the camera on the dash and just click away while driving.  Sometimes I don't get anything because I can't look away from the road, but sometimes I get a useful reference photo.

Adrift on Seatuck

Day 9 of 31
It's raining again in San Diego (and I love it), so I decided to try my hand at a snow scene.  This is from the east end of Long Island, using a photo sent by good friend that she took from her front yard.  The street is in there somewhere.

This is the view from the dog park at Balboa Park.  There was a break in the storm, the sun broke through and for a couple of hours sunglasses and t-shirts were in order.

Big Bay, Tall Ships

Day 2 of 31. (January painting challenge)
Beautiful Sunset over San Diego 'Big Bay'.  These are a few of the ships in the Maritime Museum which I tried to capture as the sun was setting, I had about an hour left of the day, sometimes the less time one has, the less fussing one can do.

Hotel Del Coronado

Happy New Year!  Welcome to 2017 and all of it's possibilities.  I started the year off at the beach, painting this historic and beautiful hotel.  It was a brisk morning, around 55 degrees but the skies were so bright with the sun bursting through after the storm, it was a delicious morning to paint.

I'm doing a 31/31 painting challenge for the month of January,  I'll be painting everyday and making them available at discount prices: the daily painting will be available and can be found at KatharineEngh.com.  The prices plus tax and shipping are as follows: $200 (large), $150 (Medium) and $100 (Small), all paintings include a gallery quality double mat.  I hope you check out my online gallery to see the entire selection.
