Golf, Talk/Don't Talk and More!

Day 30, the last day of the 30/30 painting challenge.  I did it!  I posted a painting everyday.  Like golf, there are many more practice swings behind every shot - so I painted sometimes 3,4,5, even 10 paintings or sketches to get one I could post.  Sometimes I was lucky and stopped after one, which usually happened when painting on location.  I found that painting outside was 'easier'.  Indulge me, another golf analogy - it's easier to play a round of golf than to spend 4-5 hours at the driving range.  Not that studio work is only practice - I used still life compositions as well as reference photos to paint real pieces.  But being on location, in the element, with all of the light and color and other sensory information just helped me paint. Helps you get into a zone and develop a cadence.  And one can be patient with the painting, there is a lot going on outside of the painting, an enjoyment of nature and a sense of wonder about how things come together.  Not too patient mind you, watercolor waits for no one, it will dry on you if you don't watch out.  I wish I had a digital sign attached to my easel that flashed on and off for passers-by, like the walk/don't walk signs.  But mine would say "Talk/Don't Talk".  When I'm doing a wash it would flash "Don't Talk", and when that part is done, it would change to "Talk".  I can't stop and talk when a wash is walking it's way down the painting!  It takes priority over EVERYTHING.  So, don't bother yelling "FIRE" while I'm painting in a crowded theater, because if I'm in the middle of a wash, I'll finish it and then quietly make my way to the exit!

Thank you for following me during this challenge - I've been doing this during a very busy time at work, travel included.  And I must admit - I'm tired, but a good tired.  Now I'd like to do some larger pieces and play a round of golf this weekend!

1949 Ford Woodie

Another Woodie from the Wavecrest Festival last weekend.  I very much enjoyed painting these cars!  One commission while I was there and another one as a follow up.  It must show in your work when you enjoy painting a subject.

Setauket Mill Pond

Day 27.  Setauket Mill Pond.  A little bit of an impressionist/abstract bent to this intentionally.

Torrey Pines Storm

Day 26 of the 303/30 challenge.  I painted this from a reference photo I took this past winter.  It would be nice to see some rain clouds about now.  We are heading into the peak Santa Ana season, fingers crossed there will be no big fires.

Perfume Time

Pen and Wash.  Anick Goutal - Hadrian, my favorite.  The first time I bought this was in Paris, at a small shop near the Musee D'Orsay.  I have been enchanted with it since.

I had the opportunity to do something really, really cool this weekend.  A friend of mine, whom I met in the San Diego Plein Air group, who is also the leader of the San Diego Urban Sketchers, taught me and another one of her friends how to make your own Sketchbook!  I brought my own cover papers (an old decorative paper I have had for years) and my own inside cover paper (a shopping bag from the James Joyce Museum in Dublin), and of course my own sketch/watercolor paper to fill the book.
Some photos of the result:

Woodie Fest - Moonlight Beach

This Woodie, from the Wavecrest Woodie Fest in Encinitas yesterday, was a 1950 Ford.  I really loved the color and was compelled to do a pen and ink wash.

Wavecrest Woodie Festival - Moonlight Beach

Painted with the San Diego Urban Sketchers today in Encinitas.  This is the annual Woodie Car Festival at Moonlight Beach.  There were over a hundred woodies, covering many decades.  This is a 1949 Ford, it was beautiful.  This couple asked me to paint this for them and so I did.  They were very happy with it, including the surf board resting off the end.

Clonegal Cat

Day 19. Clonegal Cat.  I saw this cat sitting against a wall in Clonegal, County Carlow - he was wonderfully framed, and posing so nicely,  I took a photo to paint when I got back home.  Clonegal was a charming little bit of a village - just a river, a bridge, a castle and a pub - oh and a cat!

Sunset - Fletcher Cove

Day 16.  Another one from Fletcher Cove, I caught this quickly as the sun was setting and the crowd was thinning.

Wilted!

Day 15. Pen and Ink Wash.  It is just too hot here.  These flowers looked just fine yesterday, but they are losing the will to live.

Old Poway Park - Train Shed

Painted with the SD Watercolor Society at Old Poway Park.  Yes, it was probably close to 100 degrees in the shade but when the easel calls... This is the train shed at the park.

Sunrise - Shelter Island

Day 12.   Sunrise over Shelter Island, looking east.  It has been so hot lately that there is little or no marine layer and it's going to keep on like this for awhile.  Couple that with a drought and it's just hot and dry in San Diego.  Knock on wood, no Santa Ana's, no big fires.

Mission at San Juan Capistrano - Courtyard

The inside courtyard of the mission at San Juan Capistrano.  I always enjoy painting here, one instantly feels that this place was built to enable reflection and contemplation.

Parked!

Day 9.  This little row boat is on the shore opposite Wexford Quay (key), on the 'Riverbank' side.  Ireland is full of small marinas, I wouldn't even call them marinas, but there a lots of working boats tied up to moorings, with smaller boats tied up at shore.  This one will be fully afloat when the tide comes in.  Isn't it grand!

Trolley Stop at Globe Mills

Day 7.  Pen and Ink Wash done on location.  Once I did the drawing in ink, I switched over to the wash and used only burnt sienna so that I could give it a 'sepia' affect.   I was downtown with the Urban Sketch group, we met to paint around the new park on Harbor Drive, but it was too hot (even at 9am), so I went in search of shade.  I did this from the Trolley station, under the shade of the awning.  Apparently the Globe Mills building was a flour mill at one point, and before the two adjacent condo buildings were constructed, there were two silos next to the building - I think the building stood abandoned for some time.  You know, in my line of business, working in silos is a bad thing!  (A little nerd humor).
This one sold already so there I've included a link to my online gallery instead of a link to buy this piece.

Date and Columbia

Painted downtown in Little Italy this morning with the SD Watercolor Society, although I didn't run into any fellow painters, I know they were with me in spirit.  This is day 6 of the 30/30 challenge and the number of artists signed up for the challenge is over 1000.

Ring of Beara

West Cork, the Ring of Beara.  This was on the way out. looking back.  It was such a beautiful drive, narrow roads, high hedges, grazing sheep, cows and horses.  RTE Lyric on the radio, blaring classical music - and a crisp breeze.  A feast for the senses.

Wee Duffys on the Boardwalk

Yesterday I posted a painting of Lucky Duffy's in Ireland, a newspaper and magazine store where one could purchase, no doubt, lucky lottery tickets!  So I thought what better way to follow that up than with a painting of a couple of real Duffys!   Little cousins on the boardwalk.   I painted this from a photo my SIL sent - it was just too cute not to!  Which county in Ireland are they descended from, I wonder?

Lucky Duffy's - Dublin

It was early morning and I was running through Dublin to my car park when I saw this scene on a backstreet.  I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that the name of the place was "Lucky Duffy's"!  My sister-in-law's family name.  Luckily the sunlight was perfect - and rare!  I couldn't tell you the name of the street, but it's near Cleary Street, not too far off Parnell.  I love the colors of Dublin.
