Rancho Bernardo Winery

The Rancho Bernardo Winery is just two miles from my home which makes it a very convenient place to go to for an after-work painting.  Beautiful weather in San Diego county lately!

A quick study of palm trees from my backyard.  It was a beautiful day - can you tell?

San Clemente - Calafia

This is a study I did from last week, and I also painted this in plein air which I may post tomorrow.  The morning marine layer was just starting to dissipate, and the sun started burning through the clouds. The light changed so fast, it turned into a very sunny afternoon, just beautiful with the waves breaking just across the tracks.

Take it Light

This is one of the paintings I submitted in the "Paint San Clemente" festival that ends tomorrow.  I entered two, the other is an overlook of the pier from Casa Romantica.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's entries tomorrow.  It promises to be a good show!

Casa Romantica - San Clemente

Today was the first day of the 11th Annual 'Paint San Clemente' - Plein Air Competition.  The 'Quick Draw' started at 12.30 and ended at 3.30.  You line up to get your canvas stamped at 12.30 and then run off to the spot you staked out to start your painting.  I looked up the Casa Romantica online beforehand and checked it out in person early before the day started.  It is an amazing site, a must see if you visit San Clemente. It was once a home,  built by an architect in the 20s.  He had eleven children and built a one story house around a courtyard on the cliffs of San Clemente overlooking where the pier is now.  I was standing below this alcove with the ocean and pier behind me just to the south.  Beautiful grounds and gardens and what a gorgeous day!  Many fine paintings were entered into the competition -  the winners and runners up of the competition all had wonderful pieces.  The competition continues all week with the final submissions due and winners determined next Saturday.  I hope the weather holds!

Finishing the block in from yesterday of the sixth hole at Mt Woodson Golf Course.

Mt Woodson Block In

I've started a painting of the sixth hole at Mt Woodson Golf Course which I played with a good friend this past Saturday.  I'm almost positive it's the 6th hole or maybe the 7th.  This is the block in, just trying to get the color key, a foundation for more work tomorrow.

This is a studio piece from the plein air study I did the other day of Iron Mountain.  I might do a bit more work on it but then again...

Iron Mountain

Iron Mountain at the top of the Poway grade on Sunday Afternoon.  Just a couple of weeks ago there was green in the hills, it's gone already, replaced by yellow-gold.  It was a beautiful day today in San Diego.  I'm back from the east coast and getting back into the groove, it is more sunny here (ya think?!).  I was reading a bit from a book this afternoon about composition, specifically around values.  The book recommended composition with interesting and effective quantities of values.  So, when the composition is simplified to three values, (which is a good objective) make sure they are not equal parts of each value and ensure they are placed in interesting locations in the composition. For example, the grass in the foreground and the sky are the same value.  The middle value are the hills and the path, and the dark values are in the mid ground.  I don't know if I hit the mark but it's good to have a goal!

Boston Spring Rain

This is the Hayden Building on Washington Street in Boston.  It rained all day but not enough to keep me inside.  This is a very cool building that was almost destroy, it was built by a local architect, named Hayden in the mid nineteenth century and was almost destroyed.  I for one am very glad it was not.

Boston Spring

This is a painting I just completed from reference from my recent trip to Boston.  I started the day with a 5 mile loop along the Charles River (with my camera of course).  I started by cutting through the Boston Common, then Charles St. and picked up the river there. I proceeded toward BU, crossed over the bridge toward Cambridge and came back down toward the Harbor where I crossed over another bridge back into downtown.  Nice walk, beautiful day, even saw a couple of rowers on the river.  This scene is down by BU, on the river side.   Later in the day I went up to Cambridge and painted in Harvard Yard, followed that up with a painting in the Public Garden.  I 'heart' the T!!!   So I just had to eat a very large dinner in Chinatown that evening.  I tried to get into the Gourmet Dumpling but the line was too long.  That's OK, I ate down the block and they served superb food too!
