Happy New Year!

It was a fun 2011 in front of the easel and here's to the year ahead!  A slightly modified Irish toast for plein air painters everywhere!

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rain fall soft upon your 'easel'
And until we meet again...

Winter Orange Blossom

It has been over ten days since my last post!  Today was a beautiful day in San Diego, warm and sunny.  I found two oranges on my little neglected orange 'bush' on the side of my house, and the orange blossom smelled like sweet parfum.  Yes, parfum!  I decided to make Sole Meuniere tonight, according to the movie Julie/Julia, it was Child's favorite dish - but really, she loved all food, didn't she?   So, I was making this incredibly easy dinner for the first time (where have I been?!), and I turn on the TV and Julie/Julia is playing.  I didn't expect that.  I think the food Gods got together with the Cable Gods tonight!  Oh, and it was so delicious, the sole was a bit overdone but I will be making this again and again, practice makes perfect.

On Point

This pointsettia started to fluff out horizontally and I tried to capture the fullness of it.

Lemon Light

Trimming the lemon tree and this one is about the size of a softball.  Lemons are one of the most, if not the most popular still life objects of painters!  You have to have one in your back pocket,  just in case.

Pom and Pear

The way the light was playing off the fruit made this painting fun to do.  I always find something about even the most simple composition that interests me  - and there is usually something in it that teaches me a little bit more about painting.

Torrey Pines - South

This is the most well known golf course in San Diego, and perhaps the most beautiful.  It's got the best real estate in the county and with two courses, North and South - quite a lot of it.  The South course is where the invitational is played every year in January.

Carmel Valley

It was a clear, sunny and cool morning (in the high 50's) so I headed over to the beach and painted at the lagoon below the headlands.

Padam Padam

I keep seeing this pear - "which haunts me day and night".  While I was painting this I was listening to Edith Piaf's "Padam Padam", which my Mother used to play on a mono record player when we lived at 79 Christian Ave (which intersected with Quaker Path, but that's another blog post).  I remember the refrain and her singing to it, and now, entirely by coincidence one of my daughter's is a Piaf fan.

Poinsettia by the Window

This is the first of many paintings I plan to do this month with the Poinsettia.  Big Leaves, big color - it's pageantry is perfect for the season.

Olive Oil and Blue Bowl

I like the way this bottle of olive oil takes the light and the label, which is a stained with a bit of oil.

"Don't Walk" on Bleecker Street

I took the photo of this corner two years ago on a rainy day in May on a visit to NYC, it's down the street from the Magnolia Bakery on Bleecker Street in the village. I started the painting at least a year ago and finally got back to it today.  And I thought their cup cakes were quite delicious.
