Six Carrot Salute

A trip to the farmer's market this past weekend yielded  a bunch of still life material, not to mention snacks.  While there I had the scone but I wanted the crepe with nutella, and I wanted the carne asada burrito, and really wanted the bangers and mash with eggs or the bubble and squeak (the British Pub opened a stand).  But the scone without any jam or butter held its own.

Morning at Torrey Pines - South

The third hole on the south course is a beautiful par 3, and this is the view looking up at the tee box.  The green is off to the bottom right, and if you hit it really, really, long - you might just lose it in the surf.

Torrey Pines South - Final Day of Play

I got an early start at the golf course and walked the first nine before the first group got on the course.  Because of the Santa Ana winds, there was no marine layer, it was a clear and crisp morning.  I took a bunch of great shots, and down below the cliffs the dolphins were playing in the surf.  What a day and what game it was!

Everything is Better with Butter

The Farmer's market sells this butter from the Central Valley in California - it is exquisite.  And it is way too expensive, at $11/lb.  But this is like ice cream to me, if there was a Cold Stone Buttery, I would be there telling them what combinations to mix up for me.   By the way, it was a SPLENDID day in San Diego, 75 degrees with a Santa Ana breeze sweeping through.  Minnesota will reach a high of 5 or 10 degrees tomorrow with 50% chance of snow.

Friday Night Lights

Quick sketch - Love this little vase.  Beautiful weather here in San Diego and I just realized the golf tournament is this weekend!  Great weather for a walk on the golf course this weekend.

"Pomegranate Hill" by Chubby Checker?

It may not roll off the tongue, but my point is that someone needs write a song about this fruit, it is worthy.  There is the Lemon Song, Strawberry Fields Forever, The Banana Song... but I don't know of a song about Pomegranates, it's time has come.

Motown Lemons

The lemons are from my yard in Poway but the music is Motown.  Listening to this great Motown Station while painting, 'Jammin 105', thru itunes, every song is a hit.

Lake of the Woods - Minnesota

This is a painting from a photo my brother, Kris, took last year in Minnesota while out on his boat (acting like he was fishing, but taking more pictures than fish).  I love the line of trees, this is a quick sketch with a palette knife only.  No brush.   I just wanted to highlight a few of the trees as they stood out against the woods.  Great photograph - the composition is nicely divided in thirds - I'm sure that was the plan!

The Red Bowl

I love red.  It was a rainy day in San Diego today and a good day to paint a still life.  An even better day to paint with red.  By the way, I'm looking for a poem to replace the one I currently have on my blog - I'm  reading through a lot of my own library of poetry and online to find a poem that resonates with me, and has something to do with the Arts or creativity and must be sized to fit on my blog page.  Any suggestions?

Minnesota Lake Sunset

>

Quick sketch of a Minnesota summer sunset. It was probably around 10pm.  I think this would be good to do in a larger format.

Grazing on a Sunny Afternoon

It was a beautiful day today and I had the day off so what to do... This is the Ramona Grasslands Preserve, looking east toward the Cuyamaca Mountains where the cows graze all at their pleasure.

One of Ten Thousand

This is a quick sketch of a beautiful morning on the Lake of the Woods in Minnesota, from a great photo my brother took in the wee hours.  It's summer but I can imagine it was probably a crisp morning.  I will do more of this one.

Carmel Valley Morning

Beautiful morning in Carmel Valley, just south of Del Mar, just east of the Torrey Pines Headlands looking east.

Shooter Coming Out!

Having lots of fun in Las Vegas!

North Country

This could be one of the lily's in the Reflection Pond at Balboa park, but it is actually from a photo my brother took at a little fishing hole in the northern part of Minnesota.  The Lake of the Woods is a beautiful area, and if you catch the weather just right in the summer season (I think this is the 2nd week in July), the lilies are in bloom and the loons are calling.

Portrait of a Pear

A bit of a grainy photo here because I haven't got the lighting right inside for night photos without a flash.  Still working on that!

Torrey Pines Cactus

A cactus on the trail in the Torrey Pines reserve, just south of Del Mar up on the cliffs.

The Orange and Blue

This vase is so much fun to paint because it's so saturated with color.  I have at least 3 or 4 vases with this same color glass, in various shapes and sizes.

Top Shelf Onion

Monday, the beginning of another week to fill with paint.  And onions.

Sunday Afternoon Shade

On the grounds at the Huntington Library in San Marino on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.  This painting is an exercise in limited strokes, to keep it loose which is one of the exercises taught by Peggi Kroll Roberts, whose work I admire.

January Poms

Tried to catch these just before they were 'done' and also capture the warmth of the afternoon.

Sedona Morning

I painted this one from a photo I took on my painting trip to Sedona last fall - it was a beautiful morning with the sun highlighting the red rock, before the afternoon brought rain every ten minutes.

How Now Brown Cow

Found a bunch of cows lazing about under the shade of a tree in Santa Ysabel,  all of them were black except this one which was away, just a bit, and I caught it looking up, straight at me.

Tea Time!

Granny Smith apple in a boat with a cup of tea?  The holidays must be over.

Torrey Pines Morning

A beautiful morning at Torrey Pines, (this past weekend).  This is one of the most beautiful trails in San Diego, just north of the golf course overlooking the ocean.

Hollywood Apple Pie

So there was this pie...homemade by my daughter.  It got rave reviews then was quickly devoured by the press.  Someone should make a movie about it.

Beautiful Day!

It was hot and sunny today - what a nice way to start the year.  I drove out to Santa Isabel and found a spot off the Old Julian Highway to paint.  It was such a beautiful day, 80 and not a cloud in the sky - but then the wind started to kick up and stuff started to fly so I had to stop after one painting.  (I think I only had one in me today but that's my story anyway...)
